Am I Worthy?

1 Corinthians 11:27 has caused Christians in every generation to ask, "Am I worthy to partake of the Lord's Table?" The response has been a morbid preoccupation with finding every possible unconfessed sin in an attempt to make ourselves good enough to come to the table.
This is clearly NOT what the text intends to communicate.
What does it mean to "eat and drink unworthily" and what exactly am I looking for when the text instructs me to "examine" myself before coming to the table?
